Gold Coast (6) – Broadbeach

There were over 70km of continuous beaches within the city of Gold Coast. The most popular one is the Surfer’s Paradise. Another aptly named place, literally a surfer’s paradise. There were other beaches to explore, but by and large, they were the same – fine white sands and surfs just big enough to have a lot of fun.

Broadbeach

One other popular beach which was less crowded is the Broadbeach. I thought this was the best place as we can also see the Gold Coast City skyline from afar As we stayed in the area, we could just walk from where we stayed. But driving there will be fine too as parking was easily available and free. We two full days out there, we love free activities. On the first day, we weren’t prepared to get wet, but kids ended up playing sand and building sand walls to defend against the surfs. They all got wet anyway.

The next day, we brought our body boards, which were bought from Kmart for a mere $10 each. Never mind if we couldn’t bring the boards back with us, it was already cheap considering the whole day of fun.

We waded or swam out to about chests height, then when the wave came and was about to break, turned around and let the surf bring you to the beach on the body board. Such simple fun.

Safety First

There were lifeguard stations at regular distance intervals along the beach. Be sure to read everything on the update boards about the surf conditions. Only Swim within the designated flagged areas (red/yellow flags) and listen to duty lifeguard’s instructions. Also, have enough sunscreen on you. You don’t want to get sunburnt, do you?

Also be aware of Rip Currents, although the surfs we were playing were quite mild, we could feel the current falling back away from the beach, you have to maintain a firm stand on the sand and if you were out in a deeper area, swim parallel to the beach to prevent being swept out.

We really had lots of fun at the beach, playing with the sand, body-board surfing, swimming and just letting the waves hit you like in a Jacuzzi therapy … so much more “shiok” than the wave pool at the White-Water World. We were also very conscious of safety, especially with young kids around.
