Moreton Bay (3): Glass House Mountains

Glass House Mountains are a group of thirteen peaks that rise abruptly among the relative flat coast North of Brisbane. It will not be possible to cover all the trails and we have to choose a couple for a day’s hike. It is hard to decide, especially I have kids who may not be able to walk a though trail and wanted to maximise the rewards (in terms of spectacular views) with minimum effort. So we head straight to the Glass House Mountains information centre for a recommendation. Mt Ngungun was the first recommended hike. A Relatively short trail, yet offering a fantastic view at the summit.

Mt Ngungun

Said to put aside two hours to complete the trail up and back, even with my children in tow, we made in 1.5 hours. We would have stayed on the summit longer if not for the oncoming drizzle, which would make the rock slippery when descending.

Tracked by my faithful Fenix 5X

At the start of the trail, it seemed quite easy.

Then you begin to see some steps, and the slopes are gently increasing.

Halfway up, we met some guys doing repelling on the rock cliffs. I would have done that if I have the right gears. Must be fun. At this point, when I looked back, there was already some achievements with the elevated views.

We came across a shallow cave. Could have explored it but with my kids around, better not risk anything limbs.

Nearing the peak. It was dirt paths, then rocks and dirt, and now just rocks.

Final stretch, we need to use all fours to get footholds to scale to the summit. It was well worth the effort, absolutely. The whole route was classified as level 4. Only after this climb, we understood what level 4 meant. If I have known, I probably would not get my wife and children up this 3 km round trip, ascending more than 250m in elevation.

We wanted to stay up there to enjoy the sights and the cool winds. but as the weather is building up, we decided to descent after taking a short break and some selfies. Not surprisingly, the descent was much faster, but it was stressing our knees quite a lot. Fortunately, all of us emerged fine.

Glass House Mountain Lookout

Having done one tiring (the kids, not me) trail, we drove to the Glass House Mountain lookout for picnic lunch. At the same time, view the mountains from an elevated platform used to monitor fire activities in the region with a fire tower. This time, it’s like at the peak of one mountain without having to climb any rocks, so this was a good welcome from the children.

Spectacular views. We can see Mt Ngungun, the peak we scaled just an hour ago!

There were some short trails there too, to fulfill some hiker’s desire to roam the area.

What a life. For the hiker, traveller and tourist. Enjoying nature’s sounds and sights. We met a couple who couldn’t resist the beautiful sights and decided to cook dinner onsite and enjoy. I so wanted to do this as part of my lifestyle design.

With time, I would very much like do all the trails for the thirteen peaks at the Glass House Mountains. But for now, the family were quite satisfied having done these two views.
